Michael believes in the power of stories to connect communities, change people, and change the world. He has worked to share his own story as an actor on both stage and camera, as a conductor, tuba player, and baritone singer with a wide range of performing ensembles.
Michael has appeared as a member of the festival chorus for the Oregon Bach Festival at the Hult Center in Eugene, Oregon, and as a member of the Athens Regional Community Band at the Royal Albert Hall in London, England. Michael's other musical performances have included appearances with the MidSouth Concert Band at Universal Resorts in Orlando, Florida, and performances in various churches and community centers with the Voci Virili Men's Ensemble. Michael has also performed as a soloist for children in the early education program of Signal Centers and with a quartet at the Rhododendron Festival in Mentone, Alabama.
Michael appears in several short film projects and serves as an actor with the Muse of Fire Project in Chattanooga. His first play script, Company Man, was selected and performed by the GPS/McCallie Ten Minute Play Festival. He has also performed in acting workshops under the direction of Stevie Ray Dallimore and Pat Healy.
Michael is committed to empowering students to think creatively. He currently works in collaboration with Chattanooga-based composer Tim Hinck to create original works involving every arts discipline taught at the McCallie School. Bringing together dancers, actors, visual artists, and musicians, Michael and Tim work with the students to create unique multi-media performances twice per year. Michael desires to connect people through the vehicle of music, which has led him to teach and to work with amateur musicians of every stripe. He has conducted the Seventh Grade Honor Band for the East Tennessee Band and Orchestra Association, Chattanooga TubaChristmas, and the Greater Cleveland Concert Band. His school ensembles were chosen to perform at the Disney World Resorts, London's New Year's Day Parade, and the Gator Bowl.
Michael holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and recently completed a certification in Music Career and Leadership through the Eastman School of Music’s Institute for Music Leadership. Michael currently serves as the Chair of the Performing Arts Department for the McCallie School. As a teacher, he is recognized as a culture carrier at his school, being awarded the Faculty Fellows Award by his administration and the Lipscomb Davis Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence by his colleagues. He has presented sessions at the Tennessee Association of Independent Schools Biennial Conference and the Tennessee Music Education Association In-Service Conference. Michael is also bringing music education to his community through his work with Doors Open Jazz. He strives to model lifelong learning for his students by participating in the Oregon Bach Festival as a member of the conducting master class and the Conn-Selmer Institute. When he is taking a break from studying, teaching, or performing, you might find him coaching the regional championship chess team or hiking in the hills surrounding his home.
Michael lives, works and blogs from Chattanooga, Tennessee and is available to travel for speaking engagements.
